About the Journal

Aims and Scope

The European Journal of Formal Sciences and Engineering (EJFE), published by Mentisia, is an international, open-access, double-blind peer-reviewed journal for original research in engineering and the formal, physical and chemical sciences, and in their technological applications. Its aim is to give researchers and practitioners a rigorous, openly accessible venue for theory, modelling, experiment, simulation and well-documented applied studies, with a particular tradition of contributions from South-East Europe and the Mediterranean region and a welcome to authors from all over the world.

The journal publishes articles that make a clear technical, mathematical or analytical contribution. Recent issues cover the following areas (the list is indicative, not exhaustive):

  • Civil, transport and infrastructure engineering – structural and geotechnical analysis, seismic behaviour, concrete and construction materials, road and transport networks, infrastructure asset management, building information modelling (BIM), construction and project management.
  • Computing, data science and artificial intelligence – cryptography and network security, cybersecurity, machine learning, data mining, signal and biosignal processing, information systems and e-government, methods in computing.
  • Mathematics, statistics and modelling – differential and stochastic equations, graph theory, optimization, multi-criteria decision making, econometric and time-series forecasting, demographic and actuarial modelling, efficiency analysis, spatial statistics.
  • Chemistry and materials science – analytical and spectroscopic methods and their validation, biomaterials (e.g. chitosan, collagen), natural-product extraction and characterisation, alloys, coatings and composites, additive manufacturing and topology optimization.
  • Physics, energy, electrical and communication engineering – ultrafast, nuclear and optical physics, antennas and wireless communication, power electronics and renewable energy, energy efficiency, thermal and fluid engineering.
  • Environment, geospatial and sustainability engineering – GIS and remote sensing, land-use change, urban and environmental sustainability, resource recovery and the use of natural and marine biomass.
  • Quality, risk and industrial engineering – quality management (TQM, SPC), risk analysis (FMEA), lean manufacturing, occupational safety, systems dynamics and decision-support models.

Article types: original theoretical and empirical research papers, case studies, review articles and literature reviews, conceptual frameworks, analytical and simulation models, technical notes and book reviews.

Outside the scope: manuscripts whose main contribution is clinical, legal, educational or purely social-scientific, without an engineering, mathematical, computational or physical/chemical-science method at their core, are not considered. Applied studies in health, management, environment or education are welcome when the contribution is technical, quantitative or analytical.

All manuscripts submitted to EJFE that pass the initial assessment are reviewed double-blind by at least two independent reviewers. We invite contributions from researchers, academics and practitioners worldwide.

Article Types

  • Research Article: Empirical studies that present original findings, with a stated research question, method, results and discussion (for example surveys, interviews, case, legal or documentary analyses).
  • Theoretical / Conceptual Article: Sustained, original arguments that develop a theory, framework or doctrinal, historical or philosophical position, built on the relevant sources and scholarship.
  • Review Article: Critical surveys of the research on a defined topic, with a stated scope and method of selecting the literature, that synthesise what is known and identify open questions.
  • Other: Shorter or specialised contributions, published under their own label: Case Study, Technical Note, Short Communication, Commentary, Response and Book Review.

Submission Guidelines

  • Format: Manuscripts should be submitted in Microsoft Word format.
  • Submission portal: Submissions are made via the online form. If you encounter difficulties with the form, you may email your manuscript as an attachment to [email protected].
  • Language and style: Submissions must be in English. Authors are responsible for ensuring the language quality of their manuscripts.
  • Originality: Only original, unpublished work not under review elsewhere will be considered.

See the Author Guidelines and the Submission page for details.

Article Processing and Publishing Fee (APC)

A fee of £950 is charged for processing and publishing each accepted article. No fee is charged for submission or review, and the fee has no influence on editorial decisions. Authors may pay the fee using one of the methods specified on the invoice issued upon acceptance.
